Embrace the fun that winter brings & celebrate the great outdoors with a Snow Sculpting Contest. Parks & Rec invites individuals and families of the community to take part in this fun activity to create a snow sculpture themed around the 150th Anniversary of Canada in your own yard (what does living in Canada mean to you?)
While building a snowman may be a traditional winter activity, creating a snow sculpture could offer a new fun challenge this winter. Even if you are a first-timer, you can make a snow sculpture your whole neighborhood will enjoy.
It is warming up out there, so what are you waiting for? Get outside and enjoy winter!!
A few tips to help you get started:
All you need to get started is an idea and some snow. Slightly wet snow is the type that works best for sculpting. If you want to start building when the snow is still powdery, fill a spray bottle with water and wet the snow as you build. You can use items you may already have to carve out the intricacies of your snow sculpture. Items such as spatulas, spoons, chisels and ice cream scoops all can be effective at shaping and detailing. Other tools such as milk cartons, garbage can lids and other empty containers can form unique shapes to smooth together.
Once you have your snow sculpture idea, plan of action and pile of wet snow, you can begin building. But, before digging in, consider these additional tips:
Work from the top down: After you have built the main outline for your sculpture, it is recommended to start at the top. When you carve from high to low, you can finish the fragile parts first and then build up the foundation below to keep them supported.
Add a little color: Snow sculptures look great in all white, but why not make them stand out with a little food coloring? By diluting food coloring in water, you can color details with a spray bottle or paint brush.
The finishing touch: When your snow sculpture is exactly how you would like it, it is suggested to spray it with a light layer of water, which will cause the snow to freeze and harden and potentially keep your sculpture standing longer.
